Shortly thereafter, Hurricane Mitch rerouted the Choluteca River from under the bridge and destroyed the roads on both sides, rendering the bridge obsolete. However, the Japanese-designed bridge stood in near perfect condition. It became known as the "Bridge to Nowhere". The bridge now serves as a metaphor for adaptation in the face of change and the unquestionable supremacy of nature.
