SQL was invented in the 1970s and is still used in 70% of industry databases today. Dr. Edgar F. Codd, a mathematician for IBM, published a paper[^1] describing how concepts in relational algebra could be used to store and process business data. His ideas were further developed by Donald Chamberlin and Raymond Boyce at IBM. IBM went on to develop commercially available software Db2 in 1983. Oracle, then called Relational Software, Inc. developed their own SQL-based RDBMS Oracle V2 in 1979. Oracle remains the market leader in databases today. [^1]: Codd, E.F. (1970).
