Extrapolation in the context of [[statistical modeling]] refers to the use of a statistical model to calculate or predict in a way that is beyond the scope used to train the model.
**Quantitative extrapolation** involves predicting a response with predictor values that are far outside of the range of values used for training the model.
**Qualitative extrapolation** occurs when a model is trained on data from one population but used to make predictions on another population. There may be good reasons for quantitative and qualitative extrapolation, but care should be taken when making predictions by extrapolation.
Contrast with [[interpolation]].
