Informed consent is the process in which a researcher educates a subject about the risks, benefits and alternatives of a given experiment before asking for permission to apply a treatment or include the person in the experiment. The Revised Common Rule introduces a new and less onerous form of broad consent in which human subjects agree to as varied forms of data use and re-use. For example, a data use policy can be considered as consent to participate in an experiment on a social media platform. However, this more relaxed form of consent may not be considered consent by users should they become aware of the experiment.
