[[Dr. Nicole LePera]]
[[lit/kindle/How to Do the Work|Highlights]]
In the book How to Do the Work, LaPera shares her own "dark night of the soul", her rock bottom moment. For some time she had suffered undiagnosable physical issues including persistent gut issues (probably psycho-somatic), relied on productivity to suppress unresolved emotions, had mild alcoholism combined with restricted eating, and was in an existential crisis. At a cabin on vacation reading a book on emotionally unavailable mothers she recognized how many unresolved issues she had been carrying around from her childhood and resolved to "do the work" to repair herself. She goes on to launch her [[Holistic Psychology]] practice and describes the approach in this book.
The book continues, interweaving her personal stories, anecdotes from her clients, psychology research and the techniques of Holistic Psychology to define a wide-ranging new approach to wellness. Each chapter is accompanied by quizzes and exercises to detect and repair various traumas.
I found the book so densely packed with insights and suggestions it's impossible to encapsulate in shorter form. I highly recommend re-reading at least once.
I've thoroughly highlighted the book to capture the main ideas in a quick to review format (see linked highlights above).
